Bachata

Dominican, modern and sensual bachata: real differences before the debate

Bachata changed across barrio, radio, guitar, pop, congresses and bodies. The useful question is what the song asks for and what the other person wants.

Visual guide

Musicalidad antes que drama

  1. 1Guitarra
  2. 2Abrazo
  3. 3T茅cnica
  4. 4Consentimiento
  5. 5Floor

Traditional/Dominican

Guitar, syncopation, footwork, flavor and connection to the music. Less acrobatics, more cadence.

Sensual

Born in Spain as a language of waves, isolations and body connection. It can be musical and beautiful; it can also become low-back telenovela without technique.

The golden rule

No dips, deep waves or intense closeness without clear consent. The floor is not a casting call.

Verdict

Dance traditional when the guitar leads; dance sensual when the production asks for it. If you cannot tell, slow down and listen.

Salsa

Artists: Rub茅n Blades, H茅ctor Lavoe, Celia Cruz, Willie Col贸n, Grupo Niche

Songs: Pedro Navaja; Peri贸dico de ayer; Quimbara; Cali Pachanguero

Listen for intro, chorus and mambo before asking for another turn. Salsa gets much better when you can wait for the break.

Bachata

Artists: Juan Luis Guerra, Anthony Santos, Aventura, Romeo Santos, Frank Reyes

Songs: Burbujas de amor; Voy pa'll谩; Obsesi贸n; Princesa

Distinguish Dominican guitar, amargue and sensual production. Not every slow bass line asks for a dip, fortunately.

Cumbia

Artists: Andr茅s Landero, Celso Pi帽a, Aniceto Molina, Los 脕ngeles Azules

Songs: La pava congona; Cumbia sobre el r铆o; La cumbia sampuesana; El list贸n de tu pelo

Think pulse, barrio and social wheel. If it seems easy, you may not be listening closely enough yet.

Son cubano

Artists: Buena Vista Social Club, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Los Van Van

Songs: Chan Chan; Candela; El cuarto de Tula; L谩grimas negras

Baja la prisa y sigue la clave. El son ense帽a a caminar la m煤sica antes de adornarla.

Danz贸n

Artists: Acerina y su Danzonera, Consejo Valiente Roberts, Danzonera Dimas

Songs: Nereidas; Almendra; Ju谩rez; Tel茅fono a larga distancia

Elegancia no es lentitud aburrida: es control, pausa y respeto por una pista con memoria.

Timba

Artists: Los Van Van, NG La Banda, Issac Delgado, Havana D'Primera, Maykel Blanco

Songs: Sandunguera; Santa palabra; Pasaporte; Me mantengo

Timba is not just faster Cuban salsa: listen for energy changes, brass blocks and casino-friendly calls.

Kizomba and semba

Artists: Bonga, Eduardo Pa铆m, Paulo Flores, C4 Pedro, Matias Dam谩sio

Songs: Mona Ki Ngi Xica; Rosa Baila; Poema do Semba

Close connection requires technique, consent and listening. Search daily as kizomba, semba, urban kiz and tarraxo.

Brazilian zouk

Artists: Lambada Kaoma, Beto Barbosa, Gilsons, DJs de zouk brasile帽o

Songs: Chorando se foi; Adocica; playlists de Brazilian zouk social

Brazilian zouk needs torso, axis, head-movement care and a clear distinction from Caribbean zouk.
