Ruben Blades and Siembra: why salsa also thinks, walks and starts conversations

Dance-floor evergreen: a city that wants to dance better also needs to know why a song can carry a whole street.

""Ruben Blades is inconvenient for anyone who reduces salsa to party, sweat and easy chorus. Salsa enjoys itself, yes. But with Blades it also thinks, accuses, jokes, regrets and walks down the sidewalk like nothing happened.

The center remains Siembra, his 1978 album with Willie Colon. Its importance is not only awards or sales; it is how it treats dancers as listeners who can handle story, irony and drama while moving.

Pedro Navaja is the obvious door, but obvious does not mean simple. It is a seven-minute street film built over clave, bass and narrative timing. Dance it like generic catalog salsa and half the point disappears.

For dancers, Blades teaches musical reading. Not every song asks for more turns. Some songs ask you to walk, breathe, mark less and listen more.

Bailo recommendation: before your next salsa night, listen carefully to Pedro Navaja, Plastico and Amor y Control. Then notice whether the DJ, band or floor understands that salsa does not only raise the temperature; it also tells us who we are.
